For most of us, upgrading our windows might involve a bit of upheaval, but generally, the work is complete within a few days and life can go back to normal. However, the same is not true if you are a member of the royal family.
When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle decided to renovate their Kensington Palace apartment by replacing windows and repairing its roof, the newlyweds had to delay moving into the palatial apartment for several months.
The Daily Mail reported how the £1.4 million upgrade on Apartment 1 has come to an end, which means the couple can finally move into their marital home, after having tied the knot in May earlier this year.
Since they got engaged, they have been residing in the Duke of Sussex’s bachelor home Nottingham Cottage, which is also on the site of Kensington Palace. However, they will now move into Apartment 1, where the Duke of Gloucester – the Queen’s cousin – has resided with his wife since 1972. Now that their three children are grown up, they offered the residence to Prince Harry so they can downsize.
Princess Michael, who has lived in Apartment 10 for 23 years, previously told Tatler magazine that the Gloucesters would be very happy for Prince Harry and his former actress wife to take over their premises following this renovation work.
“They’re rattling around this huge space and I think Prince Harry might go there. Then they’d be next door to each other – very good move,” she said.
Princess Michael was referring to the fact that the prince’s brother and his wife, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, live in Apartment 1A.
Prince William, Kate Middleton and their three children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis – all live next door, with the apartments even having adjoining doors. This means that they can visit each other without having to go outside.
Earlier this week, Kensington Palace – which is also home to the Duke and Duchess of Kent, Princess Eugenie and her new husband Jack Brooksbank, and Prince and Princess Michael of Kent – revealed the happy news that Prince Harry and his wife are expecting a baby. Their child is due in the spring of 2019, just a year after they got married.
While they are moving from a cottage to a flat, they will not be short on rooms, as the expectant parents will have plenty of space in the 21-room apartment.
They will be pleased that the facelift has completed before the baby is due, with scaffolding and tarpaulin finally being removed this week after a year or so covering the royal quarters.
Now they have plenty of time to make the most of their new windows, and redecorate the residence just the way they want to before their latest addition to the family arrives.
