Your roofline may look like a simple section of your home, with a gutter and some pipe attached to the edge. But, in actual fact, the roofline of any domestic dwelling has several important parts that help it function and be stable.
Fascias are a type of board that is mounted to the point where the roof meets the outer walls of the house. This section is actually what we call the “roofline” of a home. It’s the outer part of the roof that carries the gutter.
Fascia board is typically made using unpliable types of PVC. It’s a lightweight but strong board that runs along the lower edge of the roof. It’s job is to support the lower edge of the bottom row of tiles on your roof, but it also supports the guttering on your roofline.
Without a fascia board, you’d need another way to support both of these sections, which is why it’s so important to have well-maintained fascia board on your home.
If your fascia board is damaged or isn’t good quality, you might find that it struggles to bear the weight of the tiles and the guttering, particularly in heavy rain.
You can find the soffit board under the fascia board, so it can be hard to see when you aren’t sure what you’re looking for. Soffits can be seen when you’re looking up at the house from outside it, and they are sometimes made to allow for ventilation.
The benefit of having ventilated soffit boards is that they allow air to flow into the roof of your home. As long as you have good insulating, this shouldn’t cause your home to become any colder, but it will help with preventing mould because of the better flow of air.
You can also add ventilation over the top of the fascia boards as an alternative to have the ventilation underneath the fascias. In modern house builds, this way is preferred, but either is an acceptable choice.
Without ventilation, condensation can form inside the roof of your home, which can then cause problems like timber decay, mould, and other damage.
When your home is going under improvements or being built, it’s crucial to provide areas of ventilation in the correct places. Without a well-ventilated home, you could be setting yourself up for a future of repair costs.
The other sections of your roofline include the bargeboard and the boxend. The bargeboard is a board used on the gable end of a house, which can be shaped in a number of ways to create unique and attractive looks.
The boxend has a similar job, where it is used to support the different shapes and angles of the fascia board. Without all four parts of your roofline working together, you could end up with an unattractive shape to the top of your home or even have to eventually repair your home’s roof.
